Veps
(Vepsian) language - one of the Finno-Ugric
languages (Balto-Finnic group). Spoken in the Republic
of Karelia (Veps
national district), Leningrad and
Vologda regions. The number
of the Veps in Russia is 12,1 thousand. 51,3 % of them regard Veps as their
mother tongue, 48,3 % Russian. Northern, Central and Southern dialects.
A Veps written language was created in the 1930's, but was soon discontinued.
A new literary language based on the Latin alphabet has been elaborated
since the late 1980's.
