Kabardian-Balkar RepublicKarachay-Circassian RepublicKabardian (Circassian) language - one of the Caucasian languages (Abkhaz-Adyge group). Spoken in the Kabardian-Balkar and Karachay-Circassian republics, in the city of Mozdok and its surroundings in the Stavropol region, in a number of villages of the Krasnodar region and the Republic of Adygea. National language of the Kabardians and the Circassians. The number of the Kabardians in Russia is 386,1 thousand. 97,6 % of them regard Kabardian as their mother tongue, 2,2 % Russian. The number of the Circassians is 50,7 thousand (91,5 % regard Kabardian-Circassian as their mother tongue, 5,2 % Russian).

Kabardian (Circassian) written language was created in 1923-24 on the basis of the Latin alphabet. A Russian-based script has been used since 1936. The literary language is founded on the dialect of the Greater Kabardia.
