Itelmen language - one of the Paleoasian languages (Luorawetlan group). Spoken on the western coast of the Kamchatka peninsula (Koryak autonomous district and the Magadan region. The number of the Itelmens in Russia is 2,4 thousand. 18,8 % of them regard Itelmen as their mother tongue, 80,2 % Russian. The surviving "Western Itelmen" was either a dialect or an individual language of the Itelmen branch of Luorawetlan languages, the rest of which became extinct by the 20th century. The Itelmen written language created in 1932 on the basis of the Latin alphabet was later discontinued. A new Russian-based writing system has been developed since the late 1980's.
