Yiddish
language - one of the Indoeuropean languages
(Germanic group), spoken and literary language of the Ashkenazi Jews. It
was formed during the 10th - 14th centuries on the basis of Upper German
dialects that became influenced by Hebrew and later Slavic languages. The
number of Jews in Russia is 536,8 thousand (including 8,9 thousand in the
Jewish autonomous region). 8,9 % of them
regard "their ethnic language" as their mother tongue, 90,5 %
Russian.
Yiddish uses the traditional Hebrew script that has been adapted to
its phonetic system.
