Romany (Gypsy) language - one of the Indo-European languages (Indic, or Indo-Aryan, group). Romany-speaking groups left the Indian subcontinent beginning from the middle of the first millenium A.D. and spread across South-West Asia and Europe, to North and South America, Australia and New Zealand. The number of the Romany in Russia is 152,9 thousand. 85,8 % of them regard Romany as their mother tongue, 12,6 % Russian. (Results of the 1989 census.) Main dialects in Russia: Krym, Serv, dialect of the Russian Romany. A written language for the Soviet Romany was created in the 1920's and 1930's, but was later abandoned.
