Chuvash language - one of the Turkic languages. Spoken in the Republic of Chuvashia, in the Ulyanovsk, Penza, Samara, Saratov, Orenburg regions and in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. The number of the Chuvash in Russia is 1 million 773,6 thousand. 77,5 % of them regard Chuvash as their mother tongue, 22,3 % Russian.

The first Chuvash grammar was published in 1769. A number of dictionaries, translations of religious texts and samples of folklore was published during the 18th and the first half of the 19th centuries. The Old Chuvash literary language used the Russian script. A new writing system was created in 1871 by I.Ya. Yakovlev and existed until 1933, when it was replaced by another Russian-based alphabet.
